Preparation
Before starting any GRP roof work, ensure the outside temperature is above 7.5°C and that it is unlikely to rain within 2 hours of finishing to allow the resins to properly catalyse and cure. Composite Roof Supplies' Roofing Resin Basecoat and Topcoats will not cure sufficiently in very cold and/or wet conditions, which could result in roof failure. Always store the Roofing Resin Basecoat and Topcoats indoors in their original, unopened, undamaged containers in a dry place out of direct sunlight, and bring up to 15°C prior to use.
Remove the old roof covering from the timber substrate. Replace any rotten timber with OSB3 18mm “sterling boards,” which are tongue and grooved for easy installation and typically measure 2.4m x 0.6m. Place the OSB3 boards at a 90° angle to the existing roof beams and screw them in place. Stagger the joints to create a strong structure, starting from the furthest edge from the drip trim. If a board is laid along a wall, leave a 25mm expansion gap. Ensure the deck boards are completely dry before applying the Roofing Resin Basecoat to avoid future movement and potential joint failures.
If conditions allow, incorporate a drainage channel to prevent standing water. Otherwise, add triangulated extensions to the roof joists before installing the OSB3 deck. Ensure there are no gaps between the OSB3 boards once in place and maintain a 25mm expansion gap where there are adjoining walls. Trims and upstands will be placed here to create the required watertight seal. Proper preparation ensures the roof is durable and problem-free. Use a screw gun with sufficiently long screws to secure the deck to the joists, ensuring the structural integrity of the finished roof.
Installation of Trims and Tape *sold separately
Attach the roof trims and secure the upstands to any adjoining walls to prepare for the GRP flashings. Tape all board joints and trims (using the woven tape included in the kits) to prevent stress cracking. Apply 3” wide woven tape to each joint and all trim edges, consolidating it with the Roofing Resin Basecoat. The taping procedure is similar to that used for the main laminate (application of Roofing Resin Basecoat and 300g Chopped Strand Mat (CSM)).
Decant about 1 kg of Roofing Resin Basecoat into a small bucket and mix with the correct amount of catalyst (included in the kit). Apply to the board and trim edges with a 3” brush or small roller (included in kit). Roll out the pre-cut woven tape over the Roofing Resin Basecoat and apply additional basecoat, consolidating with a small metal roller (included in kit).
Complete all detail work at this stage, taping drain outfalls, channels, pipes, and roof fittings using this procedure. A brush may be easier for complex shapes. Nail or staple the trims to the roof deck. Bond flat flashing (F300) and angle fillets (D260) using a PU/MSP adhesive or Fix-All Flexi. Do not use non-structural adhesives like silicone or mastic as they lack sufficient bond strength to prevent leaks.
Basecoat Application
Apply the Roofing Resin Basecoat and Chopped Strand Mat (laminate) before or after the woven tape has cured. The basecoat cures faster in hotter conditions, so plan accordingly when mixing the basecoat and catalyst. The 300g Chopped Strand Mat to basecoat ratio should be 0.75kg/m2 Pre-cut the Chopped Strand Mat to the desired length, regardless of joint direction.
Mix enough Roofing Resin Basecoat and catalyst for the first "run." Apply the basecoat quickly after adding the catalyst, as the curing process begins immediately. Apply the basecoat to the first area and roll out the Chopped Strand Mat on top. Apply additional basecoat to the mat, allowing it to wet out for a few minutes, then consolidate with a metal paddle roller, ensuring no dry patches or trapped air remain.
Overlap the next "run" of Chopped Strand Mat by 50mm. Avoid stepping on the wet Chopped Strand Mat and basecoat. Continue this process until the roof is completely covered and the system is well consolidated.
Allow the basecoat to cure for 1 to 4 hours, depending on conditions. Test the cure by applying slight finger pressure. The system is about half cured when the glass fibers cannot be moved within the resin matrix and can withstand light foot traffic. Complete the top coating without leaving the system overnight.
Topcoat Application
Before applying Composite Roof Supplies' Standard GRP Roofing Topcoat, lightly sand the cured Roofing Resin Basecoat and Chopped Strand Mat surface. Mix the topcoat with the same amount of catalyst as used in the basecoat. Apply quickly using a brush or roller, ensuring an even thickness of 0.5mm across the surface. Use a Wet Film Gauge to measure thickness; an overly thick topcoat may crack, while an overly thin topcoat will not cure thoroughly.
Designed for use on OSB3 board or similar wooden substrates, all surfaces must be clean and dry. Avoid laying on wet or damp areas, as this will negatively impact curing.
Always conduct a test patch before large-scale application.
Recommended working temperatures: +10°C to +25°C.
When using catalysed Roofing Resin Basecoat and GRP Roofing Topcoat, the approximate working time is 18-45 minutes, depending on the temperature. Exercise caution when working in extreme temperatures.
